‘Bach & Sons’
Krysia Osostowicz, Jenna Sherry (violins); Linos Piano Trio
Johann Sebastian Bach can be considered the father of Western classical music; he also fathered 20 children, several of whom became composers. Alongside Bach Senior, we will enjoy the music of three of his sons including Carl Phillip Emanuel, whose amazingly inventive piano trios have just been recorded for the first time by the Linos Piano Trio. The trio’s pianist, Prach Boondiskulchok, contributes to the fun with his own set of “Inventions” inspired by JS Bach and composed during Lockdown.
JS Bach – Partita in E for solo violin
JC Bach – 3 violin duets
WF Bach – Fantasie for piano solo
P Boondiskulchok – 3 Inventions
CPE Bach – Piano trio in E minor
‘The Archduke’
Linos Piano Trio, Alinka Rowe (viola), Eliza Millet (cello)
First we hear a contemporary and highly approachable duet composed by virtuoso violist Garth Knox, full of folk rhythms and quirky harmonies. Then another of Beethoven’s most celebrated works, dedicated to his great friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria. Although Beethoven gave the first performance of the trio, his encroaching deafness prevented him from ever playing the piano in public again. The music, sunny and majestic in tone, betrays nothing of his struggle with this devastating illness.
Garth Knox – Pocket Concerto for viola and cello
Beethoven – Piano Trio in E Flat, op 97 “The Archduke”
‘The Trout’
Linos Piano Trio with Krysia Osostowicz (viola); Jenna Sherry (violin), Alinka Rowe (viola), Eliza Millet (cello)
Schubert’s glorious quintet, maybe one of the most best-loved classics of all time, needs no introduction. But first, a little-known work by Mahler, his only piece of chamber music: intense and brooding in tone, acting as a sombre prelude to one of Schubert’s most joyful creations.
Mahler – Piano Quartet movement in A minor
Schubert – Quintet in A Major, “The Trout”
‘Beethoven’s Ghost’
Krysia Osostowicz (violin), Linos Piano Trio: Prach Boondiskulchok (piano), Konrad Elias-Trostmann (violin), Vladimir Waltham (cello)
Beethoven’s little-known violin sonata in A, showing him at his most playful and subversive, precedes the famous “Ghost” piano trio whose eerie-sounding slow movement was reputedly inspired by a scene from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This is revolutionary music, full of dramatic extremes, deep darkness and radiant light.

Beethoven Variations in G Major on Wenzel Muller’s ‘Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu’, op. 121a
Beethoven Piano Trio in B flat major, op. 97, Archduke
Framed by favourite composers of two British queens, this programme sheds light on the rich dialogues between important Austro-German composers and British musical life.
Johann Christian Bach, who settled in London and worked as Master of Music for Queen Charlotte, met the eight-year-old Mozart in London in 1764 and became one of the most important influences on Mozart’s musical style.
Felix Mendelssohn was Queen Victoria’s favourite composer. He visited London frequently and became an important figure in British musical life, later extending to Birmingham and Scotland. The queen’s consort Prince Albert was a committed and prolific composer himself, and for this programme two of Albert’s songs are arranged by the Linos Piano Trio and juxtaposed with Mendelssohn’s great D minor trio, exposing their remarkable shared musical aesthetic.

Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia – Grand Trio Op. 10
Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Trio in C minor Op. 1 no. 3
Beethoven met Louis Ferdinand in 1796 and said of the Prince that he “doesn’t play like a prince at all, but like a proficient piano player”. Indeed, Louis Ferdinand’s own compositions testify to his serious musicianship and imagination. The Piano Trio, entitled “Grand Trio” in E-flat is remarkably forward-looking and accomplished, especially considering his profession as a politician and military man, and the fact that he lived only to the age of 33. An almost exact contemporary to Beethoven, the Prince of Prussia’s musical language shows more affinity to the more “progressive” English/French keyboard writing, at times sounding almost like Schubert or Mendelssohn. In this programme, we pair together the two “Ludwigs”, with the hope that their differences and similarities will shed light on the rich musical culture around the year 1800 in Europe.
